What Is a Root Canal?
Root canals help fix damaged teeth before they endanger other teeth or become so far damaged that they need to be removed. Root canal treatment is performed when a cavity gets too big to support traditional fillings. Following treatment, the tooth is capped with a permanent crown to restore its function and appearance.
Do Root Canals Hurt?
Today, getting a root canal is just as comfortable as getting a filling. Once your permanent crown is set, you may experience a little abnormal jolt when you bite until your mouth completely heals. Like any surgical procedure, you may have some minor pain after.
We'll do everything we can to help make sure that you're comfortable during a root canal treatment. We offer local anesthesia and laughing gas to help ensure that your visit will be a comfortable and worry-free one.
What Can I Expect During a Root Canal?
To start, we'll need to take digital X-rays. Then we'll need to prep the tooth by removing all of the decay or damage. When the tooth is ready to house the crown, we'll create an impression. From this, we'll make your crown. Made from strong resin composites, it will also match the color of your natural smile.
During your first exam, we'll place a temporary crown that will protect your tooth until the permanent crown can be set on your next visit. Setting the crown is an easy and relatively quick procedure. We use a bonding agent that cements the crown in place. The permanent crown will look and feel natural.
Do I Need a Root Canal?
Do you think you might need a root canal? Here are signs and symptoms to look for:
- If you have darkened teeth, it could be a sign that a cavity is growing deep.
- Typically, if you have shooting pain from drinking cold beverages, it could be a sign that your nerves are starting to flare.
- Excessive damage or disease eats away at the tooth and exposes the nerve. Tenderness when chewing is another sign that your teeth should be looked at.
Instead of Getting a Root Canal, Can We Pull the Tooth?
We can, but at Armstrong-Katzmark DDS, our first priority is to save the tooth. Having a full healthy smile not only helps you continue to chew normally but maintains your confidence. Getting root canal treatment can also keep you from having to receive a costlier implant, bridge or denture to replace that tooth later.
