What Is a Dental Bridge?
When missing teeth need replacing, a dental bridge offers a fixed—non-removable—solution. A traditional bridge involves porcelain fused to metal, anchored by two crowns that cover the adjoining teeth and filled in the middle with artificial teeth to replace the missing ones. Fixed bridges not only fill the space of missing teeth, they also prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position, restore chewing and speaking ability, and maintain your face shape and beautiful smile.
How Long Do Bridges Last?
Just like a filling, crown, or any dental restoration, the lifetime of your dental bridge will depend on your overall oral health. It will also depend on how well you care for your teeth. By practicing good at-home care and seeing our dentists every six months, you can expect your bridge to last 10-15 years before needing to be repaired or replaced.
The Process of Getting a Fixed Bridge
You’ll need at least two visits for a fixed bridge. While your teeth are numb, the two anchoring teeth are prepared to receive a crown, and then an impression is taken to send to a dental laboratory, which will fabricate the bridge. You’ll receive a temporary bridge to wear for the interim, until your second appointment.
When you return to the dentist, he or she will carefully check, adjust, and cement your fixed bridge. Occasionally, your dentist may only temporarily cement the bridge, allowing your teeth and tissue time to adjust. You’ll receive care instructions at the end of the procedure; proper brushing and flossing, as well as regular dental visits, are integral to the life of your new bridge. While fixed bridges are highly durable, they may need re-cementing or replacing after many years.
